"My wife and I had a great experience at RHS with our second child's birth, but one particular stand-out was with the transition points. As we progressed through the continuum (Triage to L&D to Post-Partum), every single clinician introduced the next responsible caregiver to us. This simple consistency was very effective. We always knew who was taking care of us, so we always knew who to call when we needed anything. Simple and effective; so why don't all hospitals do that?"

"In February, my Mother was admitted on E1. She was concerned about her cat at home. A nurse heard me trying to comfort her. She organized a therapy cat to come visit her. I have a picture of my Mom sitting there petting this cat and smiling. This is the last picture I have of her smiling. Words can not express my gratitude. To see nursing staff so compassionately care for their patients beyond the everyday needed care was awesome."

"As a Quality Improvement Coordinator, I oversee our participation in the American College of Surgeon's National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) where we monitor our surgical outcomes and benchmark against almost 600 hospitals. As part of the PA NSQIP Collaborative with 13 other hospitals, we are working together to provide value in PA. In my position, I strive to drive change to improve surgical care. Participation in the NSQIP Enhanced Recovery Program has led us to a decreased length of stay in our colon surgery population without an increase in readmissions - a shining example of value-based care."

"As a caregiver of mostly oncology patients and awesome cancer survivors, I am drawn to empathy. You see, I myself am also a cancer warrior. I believe my rough road in life has helped me connect with my patients in a way that no one else can. Not only do I care for patients, I care for my new friends and faces of true strength and humility. I love my job!"

"My most memorable kind of stories are when someone lonely calls and needs information, and I begin talking to them, always in a kind and understanding voice, and I explain what I can & will do to make their request happen. Sometimes they are so frustrated, and when we are finished talking they are crying because I took the time to "listen" to them & then help them. This wrenches my heart strings each and every time it happens."

"My youngest daughter woke up ill last Saturday. I took her to RHS Urgent Care suspecting a sinus infection. We got to the Urgent Care one minute after it opened. There were already 6 people in the waiting room. The staff told me because it was raining and people were waiting, they opened the doors 15 minutes early! The staff was so sweet to my daughter from getting her registered, to the nurse who took her vitals to the physician who did the exam. We were in and out in 27 minutes and had an awesome experience!!"

"A sick patient was scheduled at an Internal Med office, and the front desk realized that the insurance was for Family Med. She tried to get it changed but could not. With patient due to arrive she called me at the Call Center to see if I could get the patient in today with a Family Med provider. I called a Family office, they said yes, have the patient come right away. We were able to continue with a conference call between Internal & Family offices and together we were able to get a sick, but grateful patient seen today."

"I recently had an unexpected stay at Reading Hospital. Looking at Reading Hospital from the bed-side versus my desk is an experience that I am pleased to share. My entire Care Team was very professional, and provided exceptional and attentive care. I was always made aware of the next step in my Care Plan and was greeted with a smile. While performing their duties, they conversed openly to quell my fears and anxieties, and sometimes brought me to laugh so hard it hurt – but was very healing. My Reading Experience made me honored to be part of such a great institution."

"Why RHS? It's my home. I grew up here. I worked in dietary when I was 16, and left years later to have a family. I returned later as a PCA. My coworkers and team have always treated me as extended family and that in return has taught me to treat my patients as such. The patients we treat are our extended family. They live in our communities, they work with us, and they are us."

"I've been an Oncology Research nurse for 20 years at RHS, McGlinn Cancer Institute. Dealing with cancer is difficult itself, without having to travel long distances. RHS is fortunate to offer patients access to new treatment options right in their backyards with the ability to participate in nationwide Oncology clinical trials. The best part of my job is that I am able to give my patients personalized care which is very important to them & very rewarding for me. This is not 'just a job' for me. It feels great to work here & know I have made a difference in someone’s life."

"Recently,  I had my gall bladder removed as a same day procedure done by Dr. Bamberger. I was greeted at pre-op by Lisa Mangione, taken to the OR where a pleasant team welcomed me by telling me their names. After I woke, a great nurse named Jenn offered me pain med that I received immediately. Everyone that I interfaced with was patient focused and professional. Thank you for such great care."

"In Supply Chain, while we may not have face-to-face dealings with patients, our “behind-the-scenes” efforts affect patients every day by locating cost savings wherever possible to increase the resources we have and funnel them towards patient satisfaction and positive clinical outcomes. A lot goes into a pleasing patient experience, and having the best medical products, facilities, services, and people keep the Reading Health System strong and a difference maker in our community. It feels good to know that what we do in Supply Chain helps to lay the foundation for the Reading Experience!"

"60% to 70% of all decisions regarding a patient's diagnosis and treatment, hospital admission and discharge are based on laboratory test results. Lab staff at RHS are highly trained individuals who take pride in the work they do. Phlebotomists collect blood, Lab Assistants process samples and Technologists, Pathology Assistants and Pathologists provide test results. Lab clerical staff ensure results get to physicians. Greater than 40% of laboratory staff are college educated. 34% have bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees or doctorate degrees. A School for Medical Laboratory Scientists is housed here. Many of the technologists and lab leaders are graduates of this school."

"I work in the Clinical Trials Office and have been with RHS since 2008. Everyday we are working toward Advancing Health and Transforming Lives by offering our patients clinical research studies that will either help them with a current medical condition or may help future patients. Our team greatly values our patients who enroll in these studies to make sure all of their needs are met."

"I have worked at Reading Hospital for 40 years and have seen the progression of a special care nursery to an amazing Neonatal Intensive Care unit providing this area with high-quality patient care to our smallest and sickest patients. The rewards of caring for these patients and their families is priceless. Each and every infant cared for has a special meaning to the RN who was there at the delivery and follows through to their discharge. Seeing our graduates return to say, 'hi' and thank you really makes our day."

"The level of patient care and comfort we offer has to be the best in our region, if not the state. I personally have seen how MyChart has been embraced by patients (including my family members), allowing them access to their care and information with a few mouse clicks. I see the compassion not only from the nursing staff, but even by therapists and the nutrition ambassadors delivering the patients their meals."

"I thought that the most valuable contribution in my life would be to raise responsible leaders for the next generation. What I didn’t realize was that I could be a positive influence in other people’s lives through my career choices. As a manager, it is essential to implement efficient workflow processes, but my most significant role is to provide my employees with the motivation to do their very best, and to treat them with courtesy and respect. I do believe that happy employees make happy patients, and I am proud to be a positive influence for Reading Health System!"
