Q + A
Why did we create this website?
The healthcare industry is evolving, and we want to be at the forefront of this change as it impacts our patients in terms of quality of care and cost of care. It is important to know that the healthcare industry is moving away from a focus on patient “volume” to a focus on patient “value” – and how this change will benefit you. Value is really about what you get for your healthcare dollars. And we want you to understand what we’re doing in terms of providing greater value as a patient of Reading Health System.
What is “value-based” healthcare?
For important purchases in your life, you shop around and consider the “value” you are getting (e.g. quality, cost, service, convenience, amenities, etc.) before making that decision. And while most industries compete based on the value they provide, healthcare has lagged behind. But this is changing rapidly.
Today, we know that people are beginning to consider “value” – looking at different healthcare options, investigating the best doctors, seeing who ranks highly for different procedures and more. At Reading Health System, we are focused everyday on improving the overall value we provide to our patients, as value is defined across many factors that you experience. Examples include how your care is coordinated for better outcomes, how efficient the delivery of your care is which impacts cost, how effective your care plan is in getting you back to health and much more. There is not one dimension to value, but many that impact your healthcare choices and overall health.
How does the move to value-based healthcare differ from today’s healthcare model?
It means a shift in emphasis from our industry’s traditional focus on growth through more volume, e.g. the number of procedures and tests, readmissions to the hospital, etc., to a sharpened focus on delivering greater value by delivering on the things that enable better coordination of patient care across providers, help reduce unnecessary hospitalizations, actions that avoid unnecessary tests, proactive emphasis on preventive care options and more.
This translates into achieving the best patient outcomes at the lowest cost for our patients. All of this requires that we invest in and develop the most skilled physicians and providers, the latest equipment and technology, and the most advanced infrastructure possible to provide the value you deserve. And we do.
How does a focus on value impact how we deliver our patient care?
This transformation in the healthcare industry is changing the way doctors are organized as well as compensated to deliver the best care. By centering the focus on the patient and her or his particular needs across providers and healthcare settings we are able to deliver exceptional outcomes at the best possible value.
This includes considering how patients are cared for across their medical team, where patients are cared for (inpatient vs. outpatient), what guidance and tools are provided to patients to help them recover and stay well and more. In this new era, a dedicated, multidisciplinary team works together and considers the patient at the center of everything team members do to deliver care for the best outcomes.
How does Reading Health System measure value?
We measure the value we deliver to patients in many ways, and here are three key examples. The first is proven clinical outcomes as tracked by standardized data and healthcare industry recognitions that specify guidelines for top performance and results. See our Awards for more information.
The second is efficiency of care, so that patients get the best quality care in the best setting at the most affordable cost possible. This means instituting ways to standardize procedures without negatively affecting outcomes, reducing duplication of unnecessary tests, providing alternative avenues for care where feasible (e.g. Urgent Care vs. Emergency Department) and much more. In fact, we’re ranked as one of the 10 Best Value Hospitals in PA.
Third is evaluating our patient interaction as we work hard to offer many things that enhance the care experience. Examples include Care Managers to support those with chronic conditions, Nurse Navigators to guide individuals going through cancer, a comprehensive range of health and wellness programs and screenings, and MyChart for online 24/7 access to personal health information and the ability to communicate with physicians, check test results, and more.
